Was watching TOS: Where no man has gone before episode.
Was wondering if William Riker charactor was based on LT. Commander Gary Mitchel and Dr. Crushers charactor based on DR. Elizibeth Dhener?

From what I gather, Riker was meant to be TNG's answer to Captain Kirk - leading away missions, a buccaneer and a bit of a ladies' man.

Riker's earliest origins can be traced to Commander Willard Decker in the aborted Star Trek: Phase II series.

Is also funny how Roddenberry got Gary 7 in TOS, another failed pilot...

The whole Riker-Troi relationship was lifted straight from TMP/Phase 2 with Decker-Ilia, like you said, recycling all the way, waste-not-want-not!

There are definite character traits that appear in all the series attached to various characters. Spock was always the outsider, giving the unique view of humanity, a trait shared in Data, Odo, Seven, T'Pol.

Then again it was nice to see opposites in there too, like when Data met Spock in Reunification and Data says that Spock has repressed what Data has sought his whole life, thought it was a nice contrast to raise.

Definitely, makes you think the creators always have a certain quote of character types and traits that have to be filled to produce a successful series.

Polaski is basically a female version of McCoy! They even got the transporter phobia in there.
Is interesting how in season 1 TNG they tried to make Picard have the prideful attachment to France that Chekov had to Russia, something quickly phased out.
Never thought Scotty was much like Laforge, where do you see the similarities?
