But the Taliban are just a little splinter group from the Muslim religion - it wouldn't really be fair.
Why not just have NORMAL, mainstream follower of Islam? Trek never shows those lunatic Christians that blow up women's health clinics, so why show the Islamic version?

Whose to say the Taliban will even be around in the 23rd century? If our current efforts in Afghanistan are successful, they won't be. But let's not Babylon 5 Trek to prove what exactly? That Gene Roddenberry's future vision of humanity, free of intolerence, failed?

I could imagine a Taliban-Trek story: Federation officers supports a species which defends against the Klingon near the UFP-Klingon border, species is successful and attacks Federation colonies a few years later, Federation officers get court-martialed for the violation of the PD.

That's a lot more inline with the Trek I know about than Capt. Pike's idea that a Member of a 20th century religious political movement show up on board the Enterprise and say, "ok, I'm here. The Party can start now. How are you officer Chekov? Yes I understand you are a little uncomfortable, I would be too if my people invaded your country and slaughtered thousands, but don't worry.
