Hard to say what the show would had been if we had laren as first officer and not kira,but cant imagine DS9 without her.

I like Ro Laren a lot to, but I think Visitor made a better Intendant than Forbes would've.

She's a "regular" in the relaunch, so she's probably in all of the relaunch books, apart from those that are side stories about particular characters (The Lives of Dax, A Stitch in Time, The Left Hand of Destiny, The Never-Ending Sacrifice...)... unless something happens to her or she leaves or something, which I wouldn't know since I'm only halfway through the relaunch (I'm about to start the Mission Gamma books). She was in Avatar 1/2, Abyss and Demons of Air and Darkness, and there is no reason for her not to be in the Mission Gamma books, especially since she's one of the characters on the book covers.

Ro Laren is in all of the Relaunch books. (All where there is action on the station, that is.) She has taken Odo's place as Security Chief, and joined the Militia. And I like how she starts off initially antagonistic with Kira and then comes to a degree of grudging respect.

Ro is a very interesting character, and I think that DS9 would have worked with her as a regular. However, I think that having Kira there instead creates a more interesting dynamic -- as she is fiercely patriotic, former terrorist, and also not in Starfleet, which gives her an outside perspective that would not have been quite possible with Ro Laren.

I think that that 'outsider' perspective was very important to early DS9.

Kira had no special loyalty to Starfleet at that time and was very much a vocal advocate for Bajor's best interests and not Starfleet's interests.

Laren could have been more conflicted. While that can be good, I think in this instance not having a conflicted character about Bajor was better for the show.

I liked Ro, but ultimately things worked out for the best by having Kira on the show instead.

Having a Starfleet XO and CO would not have worked.
