I've read a lot of Shatner's Trek novels and they're fun, but part of their fun would be lost on a general audience. They are so heavy on continuity that for a fan they're great. But without the heaviness, I'm not sure the stories are good enough to make a good movie.

Agreed. I just thought they could provide a little backstory should an older Kirk ever return. In fact, it would be cool to just cherry pick certain elements of the books rather than use the whole thing.

I doubt we'll ever see it anyways, but it's just a thought.

It does make for great fun in a novel, but I would be horrified to see it on a screen.
