I'm not talking about the story, just the effects. I think the story was fine...it was more-so the cardboard acting against (mostly, in some cases entirely) CGI backgrounds that took all the reality (yes, it's a fantasy show, but the OT seems so tangible) out of the series.

If you want an alternative, what about the Akira class, even though it's a bit smaller? That could even be the class for the 1701-F, maybe.
