Yep, Berman was sent by the studio initially to keep things (namely Roddenberry) in check. But I think he really started to take over as showrunner during TNG's third season. By the show's fourth season, Roddenberry's visits to the set started to become fewer and fewer...

Sad, but true.

I think one of the last things Roddenberry did with Trek was give Rick Berman and the late Michael Piller his blessing to go forward with DS9. He may not have known exactly what the show was all about, but he gave them "the word" (as Kirk said in Star Trek III) to continue the franchise forward...

It was totally a symbolic thing, but I thought it was nice.

Agreed. But GR himself had hoped Trek would go on and one day be unrecognizable as what it started as.
