Still, I have no doubt Pine has the skill to pull it off.
It's the rest of the production crew I'm curious about.

I do like the Jack Ryan films and I have no reason to expect he would or wouldn't be any less competent than anyone else his age in consideration.

I just wonder if the Ryan-verse has anywhere left to go if they aren't going to work off the novels. There's plenty of meaty material in a lot of them, although post 9/11 I can imagine how one or two of the novels would never be touched.

The rumours about this started back in August but I had no idea they would become reality. Variety says that Paramount is "in talks" with Chris but looks to me like it's only a matter of time before it gets confirmed. I really can't see why he would say no. If it were a matter of not wanting to be part of another big franchise, I think he would have said no already. At this point it's probably just a question of money.

I believe it's great and I don't see why there would be anything wrong with his being part of two major franchises at the same time. He's a very versatile actor and I don't think he'll ever let himself be typecast.

And I do think he can pull off the "academic" look...

No, he'll probably do Trek first.

Yeah supposedly he'll do Trek before anything Ryan. I'm sure he'll do fine in the part, I just dread seeing him, whoever he's dating and anytime he sticks his finger up his nose get splashed across the tabloids when they decide he's a big enough star to stalk day and night. But Jack Ryan pulls in a pretty good crowd so it's a good career opportunity.

Whereas Matt Damon does one* franchise and his other movies are typically different from Bourne so it's not too much in the same vein plus he keeps a fairly low profile between flicks and leads a more successful career.
I think the problem for Ben Affleck was the J Lo fiasco. That dastardly duo was the epitome of overexposure. He was smart to get out of the relationship before he was destroyed beyond repair.
