E Online is reporting that Chris Pine is being considered for the role. Your thoughts?

Great choice. I hope he aggressively pursues and gets all the juicy roles he can...just as long as he returns to the captain's chair.

He would fit into what I am sure is their new idea of the character... a counter to Damon. But the JR character is an academic. A teacher. Can Pine pull off being the scholarly type?

I kinda hate to see him in two franchises at the same time. I certainly want him to be successful but a little overexposure goes a long way. For example, between a bunch of high profile movies, sticking his nose in politics and being dragged through the tabloids Ben Affleck managed to wash out with the public. Whereas Matt Damon does one* franchise and his other movies are typically different from Bourne so it's not too much in the same vein plus he keeps a fairly low profile between flicks and leads a more successful career. I don't know if Pine can come off as scholarly or not but he can certainly go in the other direction, check out "Bottle Shock" if you haven't already and you'll see what I mean.

*The Ocean's franchise is an ensemble and his exposure is no greater than anyone elses.

I've watched it about three times and had it saved on DVR until my kids clobbered it with an episode of ICarly.

Heh.
Bottle Shock made me want to go to Nappa Valley for a job.
Wine taste tester of course, but still... a job is a job, right?

Shouldn't this technically be in Off Topic?

As for Pine being the new Jack Ryan; well, they're going
with a new story from the script writers, as opposed to
adapting one of the novels, so I'll take a wait and see
approach.

Like they did with Bond after the Fleming novels ran out.
