Obviously, Nimoy's performance is amazing, particularly the very harrowing mind meld scene. I think the dynamic between Kirk and Spock is particularly fun in this episode...Kirk really wanting to keep peaceful non-violent Mr. Spock out of the search crews and Spock's oh, so logical argument in favor of staying is enjoyable. A highlight from the slash-side is what an utter panic Spock gets into when the danger stops being "general" and becomes "Kirk's in danger!"...he goes from "don't kill it, we should capture it and talk to it" to "Kill it!! Kill it!!" while he scampers through the tunnels....

I'd pick Nimoy's perfomance in "Dagger Of The Mind" over this anyday. It's good, but a tad hammy in spots.

"To kill it would be a crime against science." - "This is not a zoological expedition!"
I'm on Spock's side here.

Suppose you wanna introduce a mate into TOS, which episode would you pick?
Right, nothing better than "Devil in The Dark" to show the Trek philosophy.

Last Battlefield is an episode that I liked when I was younger, because Frank Gorshin (The Riddler) was in it. It bores me now. Good social commentary, but lackluster episode IMO.
