I think it is great that even though Gene is the creator of Star Trek, he had hoped that someone would someday try to make Star Trek even better than what he could.

I know Gene would have endorsed these other forms of Trek.
I'm sure the motion picture hit him hard that his vision didn't translate well to the big screen. Like Lucas Gene had great ideas but was perhaps not the greatest story teller at that point at least both realized it was time to hand the idea over to the true artist of stage and screen.

Less posessive?
I don't know about that.
Lucas had a drive to own his creation true.
But Gene had a drive to share his creation. I thought that was part of it for him. He struck a compromise.
