I don't think the writers and producers really knew what to do with her, so she kind of was all over the place at times--she could be very conservative one moment and then throw caution to the wind the next moment. They established her as simply being a female captain, but really didn't establish her solidly as a character (I think Kate Mulgrew injected a lot of herself into Janeway as a result, IMO). In the end, Janeway has quite a tapestry, but I think it just came about as a matter or course as the series progressed...

I haven't thought too deeply about Janeway. She wasn't one of my favorite Captains. But the one word that comes to my mind when i think of her is courageousness. I began rewatching Voyager on Dvd shortly after it first came out, only purchased the first three seasons, and found myself shocked at the courageousness, or boldness of many of her decisions as Captain and found myself asking myself if i could have, or would have made those decisions had i been in her shoes, and honestly had to answer, no.

Janeway was quite a contradictory carachter. One minute clinging to the Prime directive for dear life and the next moment breaking it up into little pieces and eating it for lunch. That , however could be a direct result of being so far away from the federation.

As chator said, she had loads of courage and she also had compassion in abundance. That probably made some of her decisions harder. I think the series writers struggled in the beginning as previously female characters had been nothing but eyecandy (with the exception of Kira Nerys who is a strong character- though she was still only in the 3rd or 4th season when Voyager started). That is why her hair became something for them to obsess over. She had about 4 different styles in the first season and in the end (season 4) they ended up with the hairstyle Kate Mulgrew had started off with.

Anyway, I think by season 4 or 5 they got it right and Janeway became a good and respected leader with possibly too much of a penchant for breaking the rules when it suited her - just like Kirk!

I think 'inconsistent' is the word that first springs to mind when I think about her - but as she is also not my favourite Captain, I haven't (like Chator) spent a great deal of time thinking about her the last few years.

Thus - unmemorable also springs to mind.

Wow Kevin, one would almost take it from your post that you are not a Voyager fan. Could this be the case?

What seemed like contradictory behavior was, I think, better defined as "flexible." She, her ship, and her crew were operating under very special circumstances, and that often called for drastic measures.

Normally, she would honor things like the Prime Directive and follow the rules. But when an opportunity to shave a couple hundred light years off their trip popped up, you can bet she'd do whatever it took to take advantage of it. And when someone came along who threatened the crew, their well-being, or their prospects of getting home, she'd roll up her sleeves and kick their butt clear to the Kelvan Empire.

She was bold. She was daring. She was "Kirk with boobs."
