Would it be about 5 mins long?

Sorry folks, I do think they could have made the whole Contrived Time Travel Plot and alternate dimension stuff, a lot less confusing by shoving some of that exposition into the first 10 minutes, used the title sequence to get the audience into that alternate reality. Then just concentrated on telling the origin story of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and a few of the other characters, quite a few of the others could have been left.

To me it has a very noticable Paramount shopping list of Star Trek "must haves", to the point where it's basically join-the-dots Trek.
Well, obviously it would have some kind of list of requirements and so forth (once again, it's not the first Star Trek film to come under that problem, Generations had a tick list and arguably The Wrath of Khan came about after serious reconsideration of what was required) and so having a list of requirements in and of itself isn't a problem.

As long as a proper story can be wound around them. That is where Generations failed and I think this film did slightly better. I believe that not coming out with the alternate 'explanation' right away (which in general I think was wise) was part of an attempt to create a 'mystery' element to the plot about who Nero was and what he wanted.

I think it was not a successful element of the story but where the crew worked it out happened at a suitable juncture in the film.

I do not have anything major, but I would cut the Ice Planet marathon and Keenser.

And, (ducking . . .)

I would find a way for Bill Shatner to have been a hologram instead of Spock meeting Spock at the end. . .

Peace brothers, peace.

=)

Would you have preferred a desert planet? Forest? Jungle? Clouds? Volcanoes? Water? Italy? L.A.?
