But was it his real life - or just an illusion?

Kirk seemed to be honestly surprised after he realized that he relives a part of his life. He arrived in the moment when he could turn left, away from Starfleet and towards family, and that was dramatically necessary. If he had been already been happily married like Picard when he arrived in the Nexus, Picard would not have been able to convince him to join him.

I liked the team-up between Kirk and Picard and the destruction of the Enterprise-D. Everything else I didn't care much about because the story wasn't solid and coherent.

Then it would've looked EVEN MORE like an overblown two hour episode.

What I liked about "Generations"...John Alonzo's Cinematography, Dennis McCarthy's music, the Kirk/Picard interplay, the crash of the Enterprise D...The opening sequence on the Enterprise B was very well done.
What I didn't like... I think as a huge fan of the original show, I think part of me resented the Next Generation for replacing "my crew". The original series crew could have done a hundred more movies and I still would have wanted more.
I loved the "ST: The Next Generation" series and was really excited about seeing their first movie, but none of their films filled me with the childlike wonder and excitement that the original crew's movies did. I'm sure we could say the same about a kid that grew up in the 90's on TNG and how he or she might not have gotten into the joy of Classic Trek.
I enjoyed JJ Abrams "Trek" and look forward to seeing the series "re-done" all over again.

If only they hadn't tacked the overblown and poorly done action part onto Insurrection it might have been stronger.

Stronger perhaps, relatively speaking, but Insurrection had a lot more problems than that: basically everything that happened after Picard and Worf started singing.

Oh, no arguments there!!

But I felt Insurrection was a case where the action part - which we have come to expect - didn't gel very smoothly with the more thoughtful attempts the script had with the planet.
