Default Was Janeway too rash?

I sometimes think that Captain Janeway was a bit too rash and reckless. Neelix hits it on the head when he is complaining in one of the first episodes that she has a bad habit of putting her crew in danger for the sake of exploring spacial anomalies.

She also has a dangerous penchant for boarding Borg vessels to get her hands on their technology. She shows a complete disregard for the Prime directive and the Temporal Prime directive when it suits her and she has gone on away missions with Chakotay which I'm sure can't be Starfleet protocol. Why put your Captain and 1st officer in danger.

Despite this she is still my favourite captain and she sure can kick @$$!

Well Janeway was guilty of all you mentioned. But she made it clear that she would do whatever it took to get her now blended crew home. This was made clear in "Caretaker."

I think she would have endured a 100 court martials, and whatever punishment awaited, if it got her crew home.

But TOS also had a fine history of placing the Capatin and Forst offcier in ongoing danger....LOL. So Voy is in good company.

You gotta admit she had a reason to be a bit nuts.

A Starfleet captain was killing sentient beings in an effort to "get home at all costs."

Janeway saw, that with a few turns, that could have been Voyager.

Until she erased an entire timeline and copied Annorax (whom she previously held to account for his actions playing with time) in order to get her crew home 'at all costs' and give Seven and Chakotay a wince-inducing rom-com ending!!

Let's see - he can't cause unknown consequences, but she can, and gets hailed a hero for it? Gets an Admirals promotion?

If she was going to abuse time-travel for her own ends it makes a complete mockery of the initial concept of getting home honestly. She would have been as well using the Caretaker in the pilot and saving herself 7 years of effort.

She felt in Caretaker she had the moral high ground, later found out that wasn't the case. But she also theough Cpatin ransom, found out she wasn't as bad as she thought.

Let's not foget what she did to poor Capatin Braxton from the 29th century!!!

Again, her high ground with Braxton rendered a joke by her own later actions.

If she was going to take tips from them all why even try and bring them to account.

The Maquis and the Harry Kims mainly wanted to get home whereas Janeway ponited out that being stranded is not just tough luck but also an opportunity to fulfill Starfleet's prime mission, explore strange new worlds.
Or in other terms and exaggerated a bit, textbook Starfleet captain against terrorists and whiny wussy engines.

The show might have benefited from a more frequent or drastic conflict of these notions, especially in the beginning where the Maquis was tamed much to quick IMO.

The Maquis should have been a recurring strand through the whole first season, a power struggle and influence battle culminating in the takeover attempt that leaves Chakotay forced to make his final decision between the Maquis and Janeway (not Starfleet, but Janeway).

Then have it be settled for the start of the second season.

I agree with that last paragraph 100%. I always felt like that was an opportunity lost. The maquis assimilated into the crew way too quickly and easily on the show.
