Default Star Trek: The Beginning - musical score

NOTE: This is theoretical speculation only, and not related in any way to the current Star Trek film or to Michael Giacchino's work for that film. Also, please note that I LOVED the current film, and wouldn't have had it any other way, so all of this is just me being curious.

Imagine, if you will, that someone decided to make an actual Star Trek PREQUEL instead of what we got. This film would have had all the same sets, models, props, costumes, and alien designs as the early Star Trek pilot, "The Cage" (albeit more "modernized" with current special effects being utilized to make it look more "real"). The plot would have involved Captain Pike handing the Enterprise over to Kirk, and the story of how Kirk met Spock. It would have omitted the characters of Bones, Chekov, and Uhura altogether, and featured Gary Mitchell as a main character. Now, the reason I have given you this is to ask you, not would it have been a good idea, but rather who would you have gotten to do the musical score, if all of the original composers were still alive and well? Here are your choices:

-Alexander Courage
-Jerry Goldsmith
-James Horner
-Leonard Rosenman
-Cliff Eidelman
-Dennis McCarthy

Please note, it can ONLY be one of the above stated musicians. NO ONE ELSE. Let the game begin!!!

Cliff Eidelmann is the only choice. He composed Star Trek VI.

Alex Courage and Jerry Goldsmith, well, the original series theme can obviously be reused....and there are only a couple of Goldsmith's themes that can really be universally reused: (Main theme and Klingons)

James Horner: Good, but repetitive.

Leonard Rosenman: Same as Horner in the repetitive department.

Dennis McCarthy: Would still sound like a TV show.

I'll go out on the theoretical limb.

I would go with Horner based strictly on his style and use of score, particularily in TWOK. There have been some that say Horner reuses his scores, I say they may sound similar at times only because they are written by the same composer. I have yet to "hear" a serious reuse of any of his scores, but I believe that I could recognise any new scores he would write, based on his style. "TWOK", "FOD", "Titanic", "The Natural", etc are scores that carry their own weight for the movie they have been written for. IMOHO

As a comment on the theoretical subject matter for the theoritical ST movie. I would have been all for it before the introduction of STXI. The introduction of characters not in TOS, with the anticipation of incorporation of the "core" crew over the next movie or two could also build some anticipation and widen the subject matter and theme.
Possibly a new TV series, set in the "Prime" universe could attempt the premise either as a series kick-off episode/movie or as a series of flashbacks depending on how they were written.

I thought that TOS sets as presented in TNG and Enterprise worked very well in a technological relation to the "newer" series. They definitely seemed to be built more "solid" and definitely with a better budget.

All of the above is only theoretical! :-)
