The first thing that pops into my head when I think about TFF is row your boat and Spock flying down and later up in his boots. Humour never hurts, and if one remembers it, it has to be good humour.

Well, neither of those movie have particularly good humor. I only give the point to TFF because it's the TOS gang and they were much better with humor.

I think that TFF and INS are paradigm stories for TOS and TNG. The one is chessy and goofy, the other oh-so-serious.

I don't find Insurrection that serious, if only due to the poor humor in it. Had they just made the thing a straight-on serious film, I would have enjoyed it much more. No little kid with Data, no singing, no Klingon pimples, no smooth as an android's bottom, and no plastic surgery obsessed villains. There was no need to lighten things up as much as they did.
I wonder if there is a fan edit without most of that?

The silliness detracted so much from the serious tone of the film.

I think the Federation was a good villain in INS and the whale hunters were good villains in TVH

Then, they should have done more to portray the Federation as the villain rather than the Son'a.

The movie was a bit more complex than heroes&villains. The Federation made a wrong decision to cooporate with the Sona, they violated the PD when they "buyed" their help with reresettlement and Dougherty, at first merely executing orders, crossed the line when he betrayed the UFP by allowing Ruafo to attack the Enterprise.

I didn't think much of Dougherty. I've never particularly liked that actor. Maybe, they should have had F. Murray Abraham play Dougherty and the other dude play R'uafo.
