Orci also believes that there are at least elements of TAS that are canonical as well. This will be his and JJ's chance to make many moments from the great Trek novels and from TAS complete and undisputed canon.

There is a very real chance that this history and April will be canonized with at least a mention.

more than likely the research staf only addressed the onscreen information available which tells us that Pike was the first Captain. Odds say roberts will not be mention at all.

in the film the actor Tyler Perrys character is head of starfleet academy and wants to expel Kirk from the academy after being caught cheating on the Kobyashi Maru.
I thought this had been debunked...at one time the theory was that the story would hinge on Kirk's assignment to the Enterprise which was tainted by extreme controversy due to his cheating on the Kobyashi Maru test (adding fuel, he didn't reprogram the computer himself, he seduced a female specialist in computers and got her to do it for him so he was a cheating woman user...). The crew was to be appropriately wary of the brash, questionable young captain....

My larger point was that, so far, we have no evidence April will appear. That can change tomorrow... or next January... of course.

The writers and Abrams certainly have the pre-Pike gap of history to fill in, which is pretty much a blank slate. A mention of April? Sure, entirely possible. I was disagreeing more with the prior sentiment that "Robert April HAS to be in this film!"

As is already being noted, there's a limited amount of screen time in this film, and we're already told the center of it will focus on Kirk and Spock. Given the large cast of characters already, I can't see how Abrams will unspool lots of film on Robert April. Even with his appearance in TAS, I'm not sure the character can fit into this film's plot without being a sidebar distraction. A quick reference, on the other hand, would fit just fine if we're skipping along the history of the Enterprise as the story progresses toward the Kirk era.
Thanks! You as well, great posts!

I was mainly hinting at the idea that we might see a bit of the history of the ship as well as we move through the moments in time as you suggest, especially if George Kirk was ever on the E at any time. I don't think April would be a character at all but merely a mention. As for him being canon, TAS did mention April and Orci is a self-avowed Trek encyclopedia who's prided himself on making sure this film follows canon and canonizes some things only in novels or only purported up until now. Or at least he's hinted that he's done that with this script. Orci was the main research staff and utilized Memory Alpha and other sources to make sure he knew all of the history both canon and suggested while writing this and during its filming. JJ has stated that Orci is who they turn to on every aspect and that if he doesn't know it he looks it up.

So they know of the April idea. Whether it finds its way into this film or not...I cannot say. Though they are going back to the time of Kirk and Spock's birth and childhood.

Yes, this has been debunked to a large degree. The idea that Kirk is "put on trial" for cheating on the kobyashi Maru test and that he only got a girl to do it for him. However, the idea that he gets in deep s*#t for it has not been stated as a false fact, but nor has it necessarily been confirmed. When the idea that Kirk didn't reprogram the simulator himself but instead used his charm to con a female cadet into doing it came out it met with some serious flack (and rightly so). Orci did comment that the rumor was not accurate. I believe that info can be found at Trekmovie.com

April will be the first victim of future Romulan bad guy. His disappearance from history will tip off old Spock who was in a temporal isolation tank as part of his treatment for Bendii syndrome. When he comes out and glances at some history books and see's April missing he figures something is going on and the movie starts.

Or not.
