Default Has anyone noticed STO's radical departure?

They have the bridge in a place which is not top and centre saucer!

Apparently, Andy Probert tried to do this for the Ent-D (he put his bridge deep within the ship), but Roddenberry made him change it back!

So are we liking this?

I don't like or dislike it. Kinda nifty to change things up for once I suppose.

It certainly takes away the 'Huge target' of the top of the saucer!

I like it. It makes more sense, especially in a war ship. I think that is why GR did not like the idea. He wanted Starships to be ships of exploration that happened to be able to defend themselves. Even then I think having the bridge on the outer most part of the ship is silly. Shields could fail and other things can pose a threat, like radiation. Being deeper in the ship provides more physical shielding.

Not having a focal point visually on the saucer makes that part of the ship look flat and dull.

One of Starfleets design cues seems to be the prominent and visible bridge module. It might make more sense to 'hide' it - but then, as Q says, the philosophy was that Starfleet 'don't hide'.

Taking it away makes the ships look - well, rather poor, for some reason.

This is very true, and very sensible, but I think that the ship evidenced up top has left the bridge 'exposed', but has merely moved the bridge back towards the neck and secondary hull!

It does, doesn't it?

It's like taking a person's face off their head! The ship seems to have little personality.

Of course, we might have had a different opinion now if Andy Probert had been allowed to hide the bridge away! It probably would have stuck, and changed drastically all future designs. I mean look at the Ent-E; it has these two huge black triangles pointing to the bridge! Well, sweeping back from, really, but if the bridge had not been there Eaves might not have considered having big sweepy things! It could have been a completely different shape altogether!

Alot of the ships in STO as ugly as hell.

So you'll be having the bridge on the top then?

(Ooh, ooh, just figured something out! I'll see you in your Enigma thread!)

*Starts running*
