Default Blue Versus Red Phaser Beams

I'm kind of partial to blue phaser beams for the TOS Enterprise, though the red kind is nice, too. Why are there both blue and red beams? (In-universe explanation.)

E.g., blue:

E.g., red:

The phaser back then was a non nadion particle beam, laser combination. The different colors have different wave lengths and thus intensities to break through certain energy barriers.

(guess)
