Could be, Sir Nums. There's a very interesting note about this casting announcement: this new Captain's casting is being announced at the same time
possible spoiler

Num Nums, i wasn't trying to rain on you bud, i was just saw they were saying the captain might be some sort of high level red-shirt and i was trying to correct a technical detail with which i happened to be familiar. Nothing personal i swear. I just know that STNG switched the colors of command and engineering from those of the original series. All captains in TOS wore the gold, nothing less, nothing more.

Oh, it's no problem... I was just trying to place where this new captain might go.

Maybe he is just an extra. Could he be the captain of the Farragut either?

E-Bay? Who really knows. I don't think we would want to see what was on her phone anyways Sir Num Nums.

Oh, that was a joke because she is always getting her phone stolen and she has all kinds of Hollywood people in her address book. If you had that, then you could more than likely call someone and get more information about the movie.

Sorry, it was a VERY lame joke.

It's okay, I got the reference. That's why I mentioned that we wouldn't want to see what was on her phone. The pics could get ugly. I agree with you on the address book point though.

Bengarius, I think you might have taken the referred post too literally. I read the comment as that this new Captain would serve the "plot role" of a redshirt, meaning a relatively unknown new character who is sacrificed in action during the story, as is the history of many such examples in TOS and beyond.

So, perhaps think "redshirt" as a character who dies quickly but with whom the audience never connects, versus a ranked character who literally wears a red uniform. Often the two coincide, but not necessarily.

Also, the TREK films have a somewhat troubling weakness about introducing...er, ineffective... um... okay, let's call it... lame new Captain characters who rarely figure into the actual story plot -- Harriman and Styles leap to mind. They're usually added for comic effect as the butt of jokes, and serve little dramatic purpose as characters in their own right. This sort of falls into the same fanmade category as "redshirt" characters.

But from the article, I don't see this new Captain being one of those lame "empty shirts" at all.

Also, that other early ship class i was talking about earlier in this thread, the one that came between the "Daedelus" and "Constitution" was known as the "Horizon" class. There are no pictures of the Horizons that i know of. It would be cool if this captain's ship was a Horizon class starship. Then we'd finally know what one looked like.
