Federation Captain and the use of the word "Heroic", do seem to indicate a good guy persona here. That the ship was an earlier model than the Constitution class and one not seen in Star Trek before is just weird, and possibly a mistake. Knowing what i know of Kirk's past and where the focus of this film is, and that the captain of the Farragut was indeed heroic, i'm going to have to say he's the captain of the Farragut. You've only got 2 and a half to possibly 3 hours to squeeze in the origins of seven starfleet officers. I don't see them being able to bring up much that we aren't already (at the least) aware of. However, there was one more major exploratory ship class between Daedelus and Constitution. The name of the class escapes me at the moment, and there are no known pictures of ships of that class and their history is scetchy at best, so that would be a second possibility. The rest of the ships of that era were either auxiliaries, combat or scout vessels, or transport/supply ships.

Trekmovie.com reports that he has a stunt double and will be involved in action scenes. It appears that this captain won't be 'weak' when compared to Kirk or Pine so I'm quite looking forward to seeing the guy in the film. He is supposed to have an important role in the film and the fact that he is of Pakistani origin gives the film a more internationalist feel. Which is great.

Wonderful choice.
In the 60s they put a Russian on the bridge,
now they make a Pakistani a Captain.
They really seem to stay true to Star Trek's tradition and ideals.

I do not see any indication for his role to be all to big. I would guess he is a Captain who dies in battle - a high ranked red shirt. Thats why the producers are so keen on making sure he wont be deminished and thats why there is a stuntdouble - huge explosions on set are usually performed by the stuntmen. Not because they are life threatening, but because you can get bruises in the face that do not look that good on screen.

Well better a high ranked red shirt than nothing at all, I say!

Perhaps, but that would seem to fly in the face of the article's comment that "Tahir’s captain is a meaty role" according TM's source. I wouldn't describe the typical redshirt role as "meaty"... usually they barely have names or lines.

There certainly is enough backstory in Kirk's service aboard the Farragut to fit this article's description... except that the Farragut was a Constitution class as well. That, or this ship and captain have nothing to do with Kirk serving under that command.

It sounds like good news, any way you slice it!
