Let's honor the Kirk that was, by not asking him to come and reprise a role that he truly has finished with.

Which would be why he wants to play Kirk? I admit, I'd forgotten about him eing the Big Giant Head...but the Big Giant Head didn't float through the sky spitting out warriors did it? So, this would be different.

He was hysterical as the Big Giant Head. I miss that show.

There's no way to have Shatner's Kirk in the sequel because his character was dead in the Prime Universe.

Its very easy for writers to get around that. The question is whether or not a good writer can get around that without it looking totally silly.

Kirk is now CHRIS PINE. And he's a fantastic one at that!

NO MORE SHATNER. His days as Kirk are over except in the collective mind of the fandom and his incarnation will forever live in the DVDs, Blu-Rays and books. If you need your fix that's where you can get it and let the rest of us enjoy the new generation (and holy crap is there plenty to enjoy there!).

Shatner had his come back in Generations. Leonard Nimoy had his comeback in Star Trek. The passing of the torch has now officially been done. Move on. And if you can't, then... I don't know what else to say other than it's kinda sad, really.

If you can't move past Shatner, go back and watch TOS on DVD, and the movies. Pay close attention to Generations. (That's where Kirk died, ya'know).

Let me guess - have him play an older version of Chris Pine's Kirk?

Just for the "possibilities"...

New Kirk - Pine somehow had managed to get a sense of his older self - Shatner, during the mind-meld with Spock Prime. Not necessarily of places and events that had transpired with Kirk prime, but of Shatner-Kirk's character and motovation. Pine-Kirk then has a struggle with "himself" as far as being his own person and not just freely allowing himself to become the Shatner-Kirk he may become anyway. He wants to be Kirk as Pine-Kirk, on his own terms, not an apprentice expected to become Shatner-Kirk. Could make for some good dialogue between the two "Kirks".
