Yes, quite sad. The Buran never flew with anyone on board. It did make a fully automated flight and landing, though, which is something the Shuttle has never achieved.

Both nations ultimately failed -- the U.S. lost the Vietnam War and the Soviets lost their empires.

Yes that is very sad. Just imagine where we could be now, when the USA had continued its space program after the moon landing with the same effort they spent in the 60s.

On the other hand the collapse offered the possibility that now both sides have the unique chance to work together as partners instead of rivals (ISS).
