In this case the 'they' in question would be Paramount - who sought out Abrams and his team for the job and gave it to them to do what they saw fit with.

And you're right, Paramount wanted to turn a former earner back into the cash-cow it had once been in the past. They also would have lost the rights if they hadn't made a film at this point.

So money did drive it - but it's Paramount that wanted it.

I do have to agree. I'm not saying it wasn't a good film. It was. It just wasn't a good Star Trek film. If it had not been called Star Trek, would it have made a difference? It was so far removed from anything in Trek that had come before, if the names were changed, it still would have accomplished the same goal of being a big budget summer blockbuster sci-fi action flick.
