Default Antique Poetry.

I recently found an old book full of 19th century and earlier poetry, songs, speeches and stories that I had not seen in many years. I was digging through a stack of old books in a closet and there it was! I recognized it immediately. The book was published this century around 1942, and some of the stuff in it is absolutely beautiful work and very uplifting and inspiring. It is clear that other things in the book were written and published long before political correctness came into vogue and some of the lyrics to old songs we thought we were familiar with contain words and phrases that would definitely get them censored or altered today. The original lyrics for "Oh, Susannah!" for example, are a real eye opener. There are also quotes in the book from well known celebrities, political figures and authors of those days, some of which are credited to people who lived long, long ago. In fact, some of the quotes we use now and are credited to have been said by certain individuals are in the book, and not only are they slightly different from the quotes we still use, they are credited to other people who lived and died long before the people we credit those same sayings to, today. It appears we've forgotten a few things and that a few things have been re-written a bit to "conform" to societies current set of ideals and values. It's amazing to me that society seems to fear to admit these things and tries to hide them. In my opinion, we shouldn't be afraid of where we come from or what we've done, or the mistakes we've made. We should learn from them instead.

I don't have time right now, I have to go get ready for work. But if you're game, and willing to wait, I'll post a few of them this evening when I get home. I don't think I'll be posting the lyrics to "Oh, Susannah!" though, they're very racially charged, VERY racially charged.
