Very True. It's more likely Josh wants to store his video and music library off the internal drive. If it were me I would keep as much on the laptop drive as I can, like the stuff I use often or listen to most. Then I would put all the other overflow on the external hard drive, but I would want it to be portable and NOT a desk top unit.

Here's another one in a different color and with more capacity. I am not particular with brands, but I DO read reviews.

It should be easy enough for Josh to quickly find some reviews or comparisons between different external HDs, I think I spent about half an hour to inform myself before I decided which to buy.
Price and memory are not the only criteria, power usage and data transfer speed are also important (and general reliabiltiy of course).

But programs are getting larger and larger, terabyte would put him ahead of the curve and give him at least a few years with it.

NO NO NO
don't go the free laptop route, you get nothing for free.

The link you provided us with (the thing for 16 bucks) isn't an external HDD, it's a CASE for an external HDD. I'm sure you want the actual HDD before getting a case.

Seeing as I have a good knowledge of your laptop, it's really not worth upgrading. Since I've got no knowledge of your family's income, I can't make this statement and expect you can do it, but if I were in your situation I would break it down to what I want in my laptop.

1. Portablilty
2. Good Internet
3. Functionality

The laptop you have now does not give you those things. Like I said, if I were you, I would sell your current laptop (after wiping it and putting either XP or Linux on it) and then try to get a job (You are 15 right? Can you get a work permit in SC?) or just ask for nothing but money for Christmas (or whatever holiday your family may celebrate) and your birthday. Then go and buy a Netbook.

Here's a section on BestBuy.com dedicated to Netbooks. I own an Acer Aspire One and it's a great little thing for taking on the go when I need it. (of course, that's my third computer, and the only Acer I would dare to touch )

Here's the link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....&type=category

and good luck doing whatever you do decide to do! BTW, my best friend works at Best Buy so I can set you up with a discount code if you need it

EDIT: I just clicked your link to the Free Laptop site and now my antivirus is freaking out.
