I would think the purpose of an external hard drive for a laptop would be portability. Those two look massive!

As already said, external HDs should be used to safe data you don't need every day or to make backups. The operating system belongs onto the internal HD.

Sounds like a reasonable price, I paid 80€ ~ 120$ for a decent 300GB external HD.

Try something like this. Very portable with good storage capacity. Z recommended a 1 terabyte drive. That seems like wayyyyy too much capacity than you'll ever need.
