Can I Support an OS on an externsl hard drive? (and run it)

It doesnt have alot of space, and i wanna get rid of 2k since support ends next year.

If it was me, I'd keep my OS on the Laptop, and keep everything else on the external.

Well i was thinking of replacing RAM and everything. Maybe linux or XP would do. Right now im just deleting alot of files.

Replacing RAM is fairly cheap, and if you buy from a good place Like New Egg, they won't screw you. But an External is great for saving everything but the OS, and it's portable!

What Z said. You can juice up a laptop pretty well nowadays, and newegg is a great place to shop.

ok thanks! Could I do this?

Delete ALL Folder type files (My doc. and my comp. or something like that) onto my portable device. pretty much clean up. all programs on portable. Load Linux or something on just the laptop. Hook up the HD and upload the files back on there.
