Not that we know of...this might be more of a "general Trek" thread.

It just always struck me as sort of stupid to not at least start by interviewing the "test subjects"....I mean, if rats could talk, wouldn't we sit down and see what they have to say about their ability to navigate a maze before we dropped them into the maze to see how they did?

Well this has been a theme that continued into the film era...Trek 5 for example.

No Eliza, even if rats could talk, I doubt most humans would stop to hear what they had to say. Humans tend to be very arrogant creatures, beliving they are the best of everything. Maybe that is what is being said in these episodes?

Well, what would you do if all of a sudden, you had power over the jocks that harassed you in high school?

Because the Omnipotents are school yard bullies. They watch the starfleet children cross the playground and love shoving sand in their faces.

but, "most people" aren't scientists...I really think that most scientists, faced with a sentient, communicating being would communicate with it rather than just subject it to "maze testing".

I also really, really want to believe that the more we evolve, the more respectful we will be about other species...yet, Star Trek constantly gives us very "evolved" species who lack respect for those who are not as evolved as they are...heck, most of the "evolved" species we've met obviously had nothing like PETA or GreenPeace. It just seems wrong to me.

Trelaine was actually the child of an advanced alien couple, perhaps the "Q", for all we know. He played with the Enterprise and crew like a bunch of action figures in a sand box. I almost think that if a race gets too advanced in technology, they also begin to be too advanced in ego as well, making them think of other, lesser races as objects for their amusement, like we would with an aquarium full of gerbils. The one that scared me was Gary Mitchell from "Where No Man Has Gone Before", instant power, instant omnipotence, instant ego with no boundaries, no checks and balances. Kirk was darn lucky he smashed him with a boulder before he got any worse. He had forgotten he was ever human himself at all.
