Default Johnny Depp... as Barnabas Collins?

IO9 confirms. Johnny Depp now owns the rights to ABC-TV's vampire soap opera, "Dark Shadows." In an effort to cash in on the "Twilight" wave, the project has been greenlit. Currently, Depp is in talks with his old directing buddy, (and a guy who has a certain affinity for this sort of thing) Tim Burton...

OMFG!!!! (squee!)

Well it's a crap shoot on Depp as Barabas, his acting is either spectacular, or sucks amazingly. No inbetween with him.

I'd like to see the campiness come back to it.

Nah. I'd rather see it done like a Hammer Film... on steroids.

I wouldn't have thought of Depp for the role of Barnabas Collins, but he would be terrific. I agree, Zardoz, that a touch of campiness is needed.

I remember racing home from Jr. High to see Dark Shadows. School was a mile and a half away- and mom didn't pick us up unless it was storming outside!- so my friend and I hoofed it. DS started at 4pm, we got out at 3:30. If we hurried, we only missed the opening scene.

The early 90's series was ok, but WAY too serious in tone.

Definately more like the 60's series, or even the 2 feature DS films Dan Curtis did.

Oh, I think Burton is capapble of doing a film like that... certainly "Sleepy Hollow" had the right look and feel... and he did get semi-serious with the first two batman films... and his version of Planet of the Apes was almost too serious...

I had high hopes for Tim's POTA, hoped he would have filmed the novel. The results have good makeups and effects...little else.

I'm not familiar with this series or character. The Twilight mention is chilling though...

What's the premise?

Kevin, Dark Shadows was a soap opera on ABC-TV during the late 70's. It was Goth before goth became cool. It concerned the lives of the Collins family on the New England coast. But, in the last couple of seasons, producer Dan Curtis was desperate to boost the ratings, so he added a character named Barnabas Collins, who was a vampire. From there, the show became a cult phenomenon, and eventually became a monster fest of vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and a frankenstien-like creation named Adam... There was even a huge time travel story arc, and all of it was done in a very "Americanized Hammer Gothic" style.
