Default Who Knows Anything about Radon?

Hubby and I are under contract to buy a house - which is a great house, and we want it very badly - but it just failed the radon test. Keep in mind, it's been sitting vacant for almost 8 years, with the windows only being opened when the workmen were in there putting in all the new floors & furnace & roof & stuff.

How easy is it to fix a radon problem? Did it fail the test mostly because of being all shut up with no ventilation?

Without knowing the house...I don't know. But call your local association of realtors and ask for a referal to a reilable person who can fix the problem.

Generally, radon is a gas that bulds up over time. Please do check with the experts. Most likely, they will tell your to air out the house (including basement and crawlspace) and then test again... it should pass. BUT... you will need to place radon dectectors in the house, and air it out on a regular basis.

I know radon can stick to particles of dust, but it's half life is very short. Radon is radioactive!! I have set off detectors at work because of radon. I know this because I clear the detectors after a short period. Ventilation is KEY. The crawl space will need work to improve airflow, most likely anyway.

There are ways to seal the basement or crawlspace. You should check with a reputable contractor and find out what they can do.
Your realtor should be able to get something worked out with the seller to fix the issue. Don't be afraid to walk away from the deal if they won't make it right, or give you a break on the price so you can fix it.

We've got it set up so the current owners need to fix the problem and then retest before we keep moving forward. I guess they're going to seal the rec room/basement and put in some kind of venting.
NCC, love the map. I wonder why the radon is concentrated where it is?

Perhaps we have a geologist here who can answer that?
