Default Star Trek vs Spider-Man 4 - BOTH in 3D?

http://trekmovie.com/2010/02/10/sony...rek-go-3d-too/

With the Spidey reboot taking shape it's now poised to open within days of the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

How might this affect them?

And, given the announcement that Spidey is coming in 3D and that Abrams was impressed by Avatar, and after all the speculation could the next Star Trek outing also be in 3D?

I think 3d movies are just gimmicks. It did not really add much to the movie experience, not for me anyway. I hope this is just a fad that will pass soon. I need to re-watch Avatar without the 3D.

I think the problem (for those who have reservations about 3D - and I'm one of them because Avatar's 3D is very different from the upcoming Piranha 3D for example) is that they are proving to be draws in certain areas that can make money.

Animation and horror being the two most successful examples.

Avatar has now brought the idea in for major mainstream blockbusters and I think there will be quite a few more now. The upcoming Clash of the Titans has been delayed for a week to allow a 3D conversion, Robin Hood is being considered for the same process and Cameron himself is working on a 3D conversion of Titanic for theatrical re-release. Plus, theatre chains are now working on (and spending money) to install 3D screens at hundreds - if not thousands - of screens all over the world but particularly in the USA.

And it has the advantage of bumping up the box-office returns due to higher ticket prices. And as the saying (almost!) goes - 'if you build it, they will come!'

All that may true, but it still feels like a gimmick. People spend all sorts of money on fads that pass in a few years.

Long, long before Avatar was released Cameron said he felt 3D will become the norm, like sound and color did.

The old bi-colour 3D was something of a gimmick and a fad at one point. It passed because it didn't really work that well. Especially in colour. his ne 3D, however, does work; not perfectly by anyone's standards, but all it needs is probably tweaking here and there to get rid of some of the anoying things...

And it makes lots of money. I think it is probably here to stay, for better or worse...

If I want 3D, I want a holodeck. Until then, what's the point?

In truth, there's none. Let's face it.

Time will tell, indeed.
