to be fair, statistics like this are all too common.
While it's true that on average someone dies of starvation every second, hundreds die each second from all sorts of things. Not to be morbid, but it doesn't seem to matter to society how many people die, just how they go about doing it.

Is it actually true though? Working on a breath every two seconds this seems to me like sh*tloads of deaths...

Sounds reasonable, just do the math. A breath every second, that's 40.000 starved people per day, 15 million per year.
Compared to the African population of about 1 billion, that seems fairly high (1.5% of the population die from hunger each year), but the birth rate is also higher in Africa than in the First World. So many people are born and many people die in the Third World ... and we might ask ourselves what we can do to change that.

U2 is throwing a concert somewhere, and the crowd's going nuts after they finish the song they're performing. After enjoying a few minutes of glory, Bono raises his hands to silence the crowd. When the crowd's enthusiastic applause and cheering die down to deafening silence, Bono slowly claps his hands.

"Every time ah clap mah hands, a child dies in Africa!" he declares.

Someone in the audience shouts back: "Stop fookin' clappin'!"
