Since I wasn't alive when the series first aired - thus becoming more than a small impediment to my growing up with it, I would have to be a Trekkie by default of date of birth.

I think it's ridiculous to call Trekkies only the people who were there during TOS's first run on TV because that counts for a very small percentage of the fandom. Heck, I was raised on TOS but I started watching it maybe 7 years after the original run so that automatically makes me a Trekkie? I don't mind at all but I think this way of differientating the two doesn't make much sense. And to refer to what Samuel mentioned, it would mean the all the Trekkers will be dead in about 30 years from now and only the Trekkies will be left...

I just personally prefer Trekker anyway.
Trekkie just has too dweeb a sound to it.
