Default Five Captains

Of the five tv Captains we've had who is the best and why. For me it would have to be a choice between Kirk and Picard. I never got what made Archer except his placement in history, historical accident, a great Captain. Janeway, inspite of her courage, seems to me to have made many questionable decisions. And Sisko, who may have had the toughest Starfleet assignment never struck me as a good leader, or a great Captain.

Archer. Because he had to make those tough decisions first.

Well, I would have killed Tuvix too and when you can handle the Maquis, the Dominion and Kai Winn, you have to be a bada** mofo.

I wasn't just talking about Tuvix, i was more talking about her "big" decisions like destroying the array and stranding herself and crew in the Gamma quadrant, or joining forces with the Borg, and severing Seven of Nine from the collective.

Besides the dramatic necessity to destroy the array in the pilot, the in-universe reason was the Prime Directive.
But some of her decisions were definitely questionable, same with the other four captains. Trek is about an utopia but not about unfallable humans.

It all depends on what you want as a captain. A diplomat? A soldier? An explorer? All three? Each had their strengths and their weaknesses, depending on what was required of them. Sisko: base commander and wartime leader. Picard: explorer and diplomat. Kirk: jack-of-all-trades that is experienced in all but master of none. Archer: Usually explorer (season 3 not withstanding). Janeway: Hmmm... not sure about her. Explorer, but only because she had to be. I thought her speciality was science. Despite their first mission was her ship supposed to be, a quais-science vessel of sorts?

Picard. Explorer and diplomat, but fights intruders with his fist and curses in Klingon when appropriate.

I think I saw a bit of each captain in all of the others. I found them all exceptional characters. They would have to be extraordinary people to begin with to handle a job like that.

I think this settles it between Picard and Janeway as to who is the better captain. I did not create this but I thought it was quite clever. So clever that I put it on my social networking site
