In the original "Alien" (and it's novelization by Foster) the message/warning that the ship was transmitting was actually pretty specific. Their encounter with the aliens was purely accidental. The race of the "space jockey" was implied to be of a highly advanced, and rather noble species.
Interestingly, something they sort of allude to, but haven't really explored yet, is that the aliens change their physical structure to take on traits of the life forms it uses as a host. So the critter the Nostromo crew encountered was a combination of alien/space jockey/human...(as were the ones that used the colonists in Aliens) but in Alien 3, it was a combo of alien/space jockey/rotweiller... Which just makes me wonder... back on it's home world... what do these things look like when they haven't joined with another species?

well inside the boneship kain encountered an entire egg field, its possible the space jockey race created them as weapons, but they turned against them, for the same reason the idiot "company" wanted them

And what was that giant structure that reminded me of a telescope?

Funny how that image was one of several that were overtly sexual.

The original version of the egg design had a certain human anatomical detail to give it a realistic birthlike look...

Several? There were sexual metaphors in every bit of HR Geiger's work for that film! The eggs, the derelict, the chest burster, the face hugger, and the final "bannana" headed alien... all of them were sexual nightmares come to life.
