Actually, I think Rand is a comedic role. That needn't be her sole purpose and I think she should be given more credentials but she has huge potential for comedy value. Rand was also established as an engineering technician (transporters and communications). You could even get a reasonable double act going with Scotty if the Yeoman role is deemed too menial but I favour a double-act with Kirk to retain some of the original dynamic, and an over-protective, security-trained aide would struggle nicely with Kirk's ego.

However, we don't really need more senior officers. I find it so snobbish that people have been conditioned to think that non-commissioned crew can't contribute to a story (even O'Brien was ret-conned from being a lieutenant). We have a gap for security chief and a female Andorian would be really cool but otherwise Rand can stay a petty officer amd still be a cool character.
