It's now been a little over a month since the pilot for Caprica, Ronald D. Moore's prequel to Battlestar Galactica has been released on DVD. I've finally gotten around to purchasing and viewing it, and i must say, I found myself completely engrossed by it. I don't want to give away any plot details since i am sure there are many who might read this who have not yet seen it, but i do want to recommend it, especially, if you are a fan of Moore's prior work on Battlestar. Without getting into details, i will say, based on the pilot, that the show seems to revolve around the topic of monotheistic religion. Specifically, Moore is exploring how monotheistic religion clashes with polytheism, technology, and a non-monotheistic cultural values. This maybe his most controversial work yet. We know he dealt with some of these themes in Battlestar, but Battlestar was also a fun, action-filled romp with space battles. None of that here. This is a much more human-level drama that explores man on the cutting edge of becoming a god himself, that is, being able to create sentient life. The pilot is full of sex, violence, and religion, a most potent combination.

I haven't got around to seeing it yet. I'm kinda all Battlestar'd out, so to speak. I'm sure I'll get around to it sometime.
