Default Where was Sulu's phaser on the drilling platform?

All he carried was his sword. Why not a phaser?

It'll be on the DVD's list of deleted scenes...

It could have fallen out when he "landed" underneath the platform or on his way to the top of the platform and we just didn't see it.

Or it could have been part of the contrived plot to tie Sulu's TOS era fencing skills to the new movie. That's basically it. And like my wife loves to tell me, it's just a movie. You're not supposed to ask those questions.

Just like the PSI2000 virus was contrived to allow him to display his sword skills in TOS originally?
