well, won't be long.

I'm just kinda saddened that they took the old view of sulu (i.e.: the stereotypes must go, not all asian men are ninjas, and they don't all know kung fu), and decided to toss it in favor of a new, kung fu ninja version.

But, think about this though.....

Would you rather not have an away-team member on your side who could look around his environment, and find 100 ways to kill a potential enemy if things got really bad?

Then I ask this:

What would you have thought if George Takei had done similar moves back in the 60's, or even during any of the first couple of movies?

What if he'd a done a full on Jackie Chan on the security guard in Star Trek III?

Why make Sulu a bada**? Because the writer can.

In universe speculation:
Sulu may have mentioned fencing as his advanced form of melee combat.....but clearly, he knew much more. I wouldn't even tell my own friends what I was capable of, for fear it might compromise the tactical situation. They might expect far too much out of me in combat. But, give them little to expect, and then break out da' whoop a**....then they respect you in a whole new light.

Do you multiply your repair estimates by a factor of four?

for me star trek is foremost:
red blooded, all american, soda pop, bubble gum cheesiness

this may sound a little derogatory, but it's not
making good entertainment is a very hard thing to do

in one episode Quark compares the federation to root beer, and how everybody falls in love with it
for me that's the perfect description of american pop culture in general and Star Trek in specific

QUARK: I want you to try something for me.
GARAK: What is it?
QUARK: A human drink. It's called "root beer".
GARAK: I don't know.
QUARK: Come on. Aren't you the least bit curious?
GARAK: (drinks and revulses) It's vile!
QUARK: I know. It's so bubbly and cloying.
GARAK: Just like the Federation.
QUARK: And the problem is....if you drink enough of it, you start to like it.
GARAK: It's insidious.
QUARK: Just like the Federation.

The episode of which you speak is one of my alltime faves from DS9 "The Way of the Warrior".

-Religion
-Exclusive to any sect of fanboys/girls
-A collection of sacred texts

After all, it is ONLY entertainment.

If he'd shown up with an epee you'd be here pointing out what an idiot he and/or the writers are. You are allowewd to use common sense and imagination. Both of which I'm sure you have plenty of.

Huh?!? Did I miss something? Weren't we all getting along a moment ago?

Did someone upset you Martok? Do you need a TrekkieHug?

Otherwise this thread just looks designed to stir things up, and I ain't biting, other than to just point that out.
