actually the enterprise was connected to space dock. if you check out the photo of spackdock on the startrekmovie.com and go to dossiers, search for federation and on the far side you see the enterprise clearly docked. also you see the enterprise docked when the shuttle carring kirk and mccoy go over the ship. to me i would love to see drydock like TMP.

Maybe the ship was held by mini tractor beams from the station????? Obviously there is no round docking port (like on each side of the neck) for people to walk through on the front of the saucer.

The ship is docked at the front of the saucer, can't you see the space dock light shining on the front of the soucer in the picture above. The first shout of the shuttle going to the enterprise you see the abouve pic, i have watched the move a few times its docked, we just dont see the acully connect. The picture of the space dock also shows the Enterprise docked at the front saucer, backing up the above photo.

I just frame stepped the movie, the enterprise was docked via the port side of the saucer
