Where was Sulu's phaser on the drilling platform?
All he carried was his sword. Why not a phaser?

It could have fallen out when he "landed" underneath the platform or on his way to the top of the platform and we just didn't see it.

Or it could have been part of the contrived plot to tie Sulu's TOS era fencing skills to the new movie. That's basically it. And like my wife loves to tell me, it's just a movie. You're not supposed to ask those questions.

he lost it in the fight, there was a quick cut shot of Sulus phaser going diving with no parachute..

So they make a referrence to "The Naked Time" and the old-schoolers complain. The usual disclaimer is still true: some people just cannot be satisfied, so don't even try.
