I thought it was amusing in movies 2-6 that EVERYONE'S uniforms became red. I imagined the redshirts of the 23rd century, sick of their high mortality rate threatened to go on strike unless everyone accepted equal risk. Then the Starfleet casualty rate grew too high, so by the 24th Century the decision was made to regulate the redshirts to the command officers because captains tend to have a slightly lower mortality rate. The REAL mystery here is why didn't Starfleet do away with the color red altogether? Hmmm....I guess they did for The Motion Picture, but apparently eliminating red altogether didn't work, so they scratched that idea.
