Who is your favorite science fiction author, and why? Mine is the late Isaac Asimov, because his stories are both straightforward and thought-provoking. I especially like his Foundation series.
There are many other possibilities: Arthur C. Clarke, Frederick Pohl, Clifford Simak, Larry Niven, Harry Harrison, Alan Dean Foster, et al. Which author is yours, and why? |

Don't know if I've a fav anymore as I don't read much sci-fi these days. The author you mentioned are great. I'd add to that list-
Ray Bradbury Frank Herbert Orson Scott Card William Gibson Kim Stanley Robinson Samuel Delany John Varley Phillip K. Dick ...so many greats!

Ray Bradbury - poetic, very human stories
Harlan Ellison - take no prisoners, in your face dark fantasy and science fiction Richard Matheson - takes the everyday, and turns it on it's head Murray Leinster - Would Star Trek exist without this man's form of western adventure meets science fiction storytelling? I doubt it! Henry Kuttner - read one of his paragraphs, describing some out of this world artifact, or scene... breathtaking! John W. Campbell - The man who forced science fiction to grow up and become something more than juvinile "comic book" stuff. Robert Heinlien - Honestly, this man could write a grocery list that could sell 3 million copies.

By the way, does anyone know if they're finally going to make a movie out of Asimov's Foundation novels? They are so intricate that it would take more than one movie, actually.
In the right hands, they could blow Star Wars away (though not Star Trek :-) ). |

Harry Turtledove, even though I don't think alt history should be placed in the sci fi genre.
