According to the Wikipedia, Yelchin was born in Russia:
Quote:
Walter Koenig, the original Chekov, was born in Chicago, although his parents, like Yelchin's, were also born in the Soviet Union. Koenig's parents were Lithuanian. Like you, I can certainly hear differences in the accent. |

What kinda miracle worker is he anyway looks like he deserves the rank of captain since he was multitasking everything from the transporter to the toilet.Guess he got fired when he missed beaming spocks mom onboard.

Chekov is obviously a prodigy, like Mozart, in the field of quantum physics.

I have no strong feelings about his accent. I thought it was a bit hammy on the first viewing, but I've gotten used to it now.
Oddly enough, the ladies I've spoken to about it all claim it to be utterly adorable. ![]() |

His feat wasn't that remarkable. All he did was compute the changing gravitational pull of Vulcan and added that to the equation. Anyone taking quantum physics could do it, it's just that Chekov realized it when the computer hadn't.

The novelization of the movie indicates that Checkov's Urals accent comes from his being recently recruited into Starfleet from the "venerable Star City Conservatory" outside Moscow.
At age 17 and three/four years into Starfleet (he completed his university schooling in Russia at 14???), he probably has a classroom understanding of English and is just getting to put it to use. That is, unless by the 22nd century everyone everywhere speaks English. Jeez, I hope not.... |
