I really can't decide! Urm, it depends on the situation and the character.

If the character is kinda a throw-back to a more "romantic" hero type the yeah "Punch it" works in those extreme situation when the star is about to nova and you got 10 seconds before the ship is space-dust!

Engage is more for everyday setting a course, can be used in the extreme situations.

So I vote - both!

I never really liked engage and Make it so drove me crazy i was not a big fan of Picards I think Riker would have been better after all Kirk is in Riker just with an extra e
Punch it was good but that should be for Pike

Remembering the scene of him as a kid in the car I would love to hear him at least once say something like Pedal to the Metal, or Gun It for emergencies
but for normal I always like the ahead warp factor ...

During benign situations, Captain Pike's easy going style well suited the "Punch it" order. Would've been interesting to hear the captain heroically give that same order whilst getting the Enterprise out of a desperate situation.

(BTW, interesting to note that in "The Cage" when Pike gives the command to go to warp, he says: "Engage".)

As for the topic at hand, I think Kirk should say something like, *points finger at window-viewscreen* "Lock and load," as he sprawls in his chair like he owns the joint, which he kind of does. Very cowboy-ish.
