I say he is alive based on the beginning of the movie, black hole opens and the ship flies through.
Fair enough this black hole formed in the middle of the ship but even then sections of the ship could have broken off and exited the black hole in another timeline.

It's a testament to the changing terminology of this singularity (or just stupidly written).

It's called a black hole when Spock uses it to collapse the star and when it destroys Vulcan but is called a singularity when the Narada and Spocks ship emerge. Also when Neros ship is about to be destoyed.

Also why would they call it a lightning storm in space if it was a black hole, Federation ships must have seen what a black hole looks like after exploring the galaxy for 200 years.

We also have to take into account that the conditions are different between the black hole created to destroy the supernova and the black hole created around the Narada.

First and foremost is the supernova itself; there's a distinct possibility that whatever properties the star had that made its supernova capable of creating the subspace shockwave that destroyed Romulus also contributed to making the time vortex.

There's no guarantee the red-matter-induced black hole will do anything but crush the Narada and spit its remains out as X-rays.

Trek has an annoying way of bringing back those that are dead. I would assume a his ship being sucked into a black hole within his ship would probably kill him but I would never say never these days.

People just don't do the decent thing and stay dead anymore.

Also the whole batch of the red matter was ignited, or annihilated or whatever it is red matter does! Point is, maybe since all of it was effectively used at once it created a different scenario. Something no ship could survive passing through. Who knows, it's scifi, it wouldn't take much to bring the miner back but I have to agree with Saq,

I think the biggest little matter is that before the big singularity formed, little bits of Red Matter were flying off and erupting into almost infinitesimally short lived mini black holes and were turning the Naranda into Swiss cheese from within even before the main singularity erupted.

Either, Nero and his ship were destroyed in the spatial distorton, or they were transpoprted back to the time from which they came (or another time.)
