I was trying to be sarcastic.

Kirk should court martial those three thugs and send them off to Rura Penthe. Its called justice, not a personal grudge or revenge. Justice!

Yeah, I figured that out after the fact. The conversation moved without me while I was typing. Edited my post to reflect as much. Sorry!

Wait, if you're being sarcastic... I have no idea how you got that particular 'insight' from what I was saying. I didn't say a thing about the actual necessity of violence. :P

I would like to have seen Finnegan make an appearence in the Academy! Where the hell was he? I know it wouldn't have added anything to the story, but I'm fussy when it comes to these tiny details :P

Hehehe. I dont know the original history but when did Shatner Kirk enlist vs Pine Kirk? Was Shatner 18 and Pine 22? Finnegan would have already been gone.

Given Kirk's personality he probably already got even with them during his days at the Academy. Remember that the only guy he never got even with was Finnegan. I'm sure they got theirs before Enterprise was launched. And as Captain of a starship he can not allow personal animosities like a 3+ year old bar fight interfere with how he commands.

I find it unrealistic that Kirk became Captain right away. Anyway, this topic has been discussed many times.

Plus fighting is not 3+ year old behavior. Would you classify boxing players and wrestlers as 3 year olds? Or as 5 year olds?

If Kirk wants to be viewed as a MAN, he needs to show those bullies who's boss. Thats how people here in the south do it, specifically in Alabama.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the fight occurred, and then three years passed, and then Kirk was captain. For Kirk to then take advantage of his position to punish someone for punching him in the face three years ago would kill every second of character development since before he joined Starfleet.

If Kirk wants to be viewed as a man, there is a lot more he has to do than just throw his weight around and settle ancient scores. And even if that was all he had to do to be seen as a man, he also has to be viewed as a Starfleet captain, which neatly precludes settling old scores when they're with members of his own crew.
