I'm quite vocal about bring Rand in as Kirk's Yeoman with the twist that she is also responsible for his personal security. Ths has lots of comic potential if she is a bit awestruck and overzealous. A petite blonde blasting in a mini skirt and flooring anybody suspicious, including foxy alien women. It would be a nice nod to the torch she carried for him in TOS.

Rand "It looked like she was going for a gun sir!"
Kirk "Yeoman, she's wearing a silver space bikini, where exactly is she going to hide a gun? Just to be on the safe side, I'll frisk her in my quarters after I replace this ripped shirt."

Chapel is only going to get to do more than hand out hypo-sprays if she is allowed to accompany a landing team. However, she is overqualified to be a nurse (Biology degree and probably masters or diplomas (possibly even including a phd) in Paleobiology, Archaeology, Endocrinology, nursing, and possibly even Anthropology, plus she was studying a medical degree during the 5-year mission). She'd make a great addition to a landing party. Alternatively a few quips when assisting McCoy's 'old country doctor' could allude to her considerable qualifications in a toungue in cheek way.

Even if we assume that Saavik was the same age as Kirsty Alley in TWOK (30 I think) she'd only be 3 in 2258. I'd quite like to see them find her on the abandoned Romulan colony as a child but 3 is a bit too young just yet. It would be fun to see Uhura struggle with a violent, bad-tempered alien teen foster child with designs on her man, counterpointed by Spock's patient attempts to teach her the path of logic.

I'd say bring in Decker (junior science officer) and Ilia (junior navigator) as cameos to replace main characters when they leave their posts (they deserve as much of a chance as R2D2), and why not Riley, Kyle, DeSalle etc. Maybe Ann Mulhall as Scotty's number 2 (she has the added dimension of being an exobiologist as well as an engineer), which would even up the male female divide a bit.

Carol Marcus would get a big thumbs up as a love interest for Kirk in the next film.

Sacrilege!
It's this or complete heresy of Roddenberry's vision:

Rand and Chapel are a must. I would also like to see Lt. Leslie and Riley (or is it O'Riley?). More than anything, I would like to see more female characters and aliens. I really loved all the random aliens on the bridge in ST XI. I just want them to delve into some of their characters a bit more. Also - bring back Lt. Marlena Moreau from "Mirror, Mirror."
