Is NewWarp the same as PrimeWarp? OCU or MCU?

The Federation experimented with NewWarp for a while, but the public didn't really like it that much, so they went back to "ClassicWarp"... and then there came "Classic Cherry Warp," and "Classic Vanilla Warp."
They recently came out with "WarpZero," but the jury is still out.

Actually, it was. As a Nova-class science vessel, it would be expected that the Equinox would be deployed into newly-charted sectors or star systems first explored by a larger starship--such as a Galaxy-class--for the more detailed follow-up research and analysis missions.
Bigger ships could be in deep-space for longer periods of time, but the Equinox herself probably had the same range of an old-style Constitution-class ship, IMO...

But the Nova isn't that fast...

With a top speed of Warp 8, the Nova is a pretty fast ship by itself--it's just that there are ships that can go even faster, that's all. For a vessel whose primary purpose is long-term scientific research, it doesn't really need to be as fast as a more combat-oriented vessel. What the Nova lacks in top speed, it more than compensates with superior scientific instrumentation (where long and slow scans are likely preferred over short and quick ones).
Besides, Warp 6 seems to be the normal cruising speed that most vessels can hold without extensively damaging their engines. On a long trip, the Nova can probably hold her own against most vessels in the fleet. It's only at emergency speeds (which a vessel can only sustain for a limited time anyway before blowing out its engines) that it will lose a race over a short distance...
